Ocean Marine Insurance: Protecting Global Trade

Ocean Marine Insurance

Ocean Marine Insurance is one of the oldest forms of protection, covering ships, cargo, and transport liabilities across international waters. It provides financial security for goods in transit, the vessels that carry them, and the liabilities that arise from maritime operations. Whether you are an importer, exporter, or vessel owner, this coverage ensures your supply chain remains unbroken.

The “Risk Reality”: General Average

Maritime law contains a terrifying concept called “General Average.” If a captain must jettison cargo to save the ship during a storm, all cargo owners—even those whose goods were safe—must split the cost of the lost cargo. The World Shipping Council reports that hundreds of containers are lost at sea annually. Without Ocean Marine insurance, your business could be forced to pay thousands of dollars for someone else’s lost freight just to release your own goods.

Ocean Marine Insurance Coverage

We build comprehensive marine packages that cover the goods, the hull, and the liability.

What is Covered
Cargo Coverage: Protects your goods from physical damage, theft, or loss while in transit (warehouse-to-warehouse).
Hull and Machinery: Covers physical damage to the vessel itself, including engines and equipment.
Protection & Indemnity (P&I): Liability coverage for bodily injury to crew/passengers and damage to other vessels or docks.
General Average: Covers your share of the costs if a General Average event is declared.
What is NOT Covered (Exclusions)
Improper Packing: Damage caused because goods were poorly secured inside the container is usually excluded.
Delay: Financial loss caused simply by the shipment arriving late is typically not covered.

The “Dream” Difference: Standard vs. Comprehensive

Most direct quotes only cover the basics in the left column. We shop multiple carriers to secure the critical add-ons in the right column that actually protect your livelihood.

Risk Area General Liability Ocean Marine Policy
Goods at your warehouse Covered Excluded (Usually)
Goods on the water Excluded Covered
Vessel Collision Liability Excluded Covered
Crew Injuries (Jones Act) Excluded Covered (P&I)

Ocean Marine Insurance Cost

“How much does ocean marine insurance cost?” Costs are generally calculated as a percentage of the shipment value or the vessel’s hull value.

  • Cargo Rates: Per-shipment policies might cost 0.3% to 0.5% of the cargo value, while annual policies for frequent shippers are more economical.
  • Cost Factors: Routes matter. Shipping through piracy-prone waters or war zones will trigger significant surcharges.
  • Vessel Size: Hull insurance is priced based on the vessel’s age, survey report, and intended navigation limits.

The “Independent Difference”: Why Dream Assurance?

Maritime insurance is global and complex. “Independent Means Multiple Choices” connects you with carriers who understand international incoterms.

  • Global Reach: We work with major marine underwriters who have claims agents in ports around the world.
  • Incoterm Advice: We help you understand when risk transfers from seller to buyer (FOB vs. CIF) to ensure you aren’t paying for coverage you don’t need.
  • Personal Advocacy: If cargo is seized or damaged, our team assists with the complex paperwork required to release bonds and settle claims.

If you’re looking for real people that handles your needs fast then dream assurance is the way to go. Micheal Moran is probably the best insurance agent I’ve ever had. No matter the time or day, he finds a way to respond back. Not to mention we’re in two different time zones and he works like we’re in the same state. I wish I could give them more stars. Forgot to mention they’ll beat any insurance rates you find!!!

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “All Risk” cargo insurance cover?
“All Risk” covers physical loss or damage from any external cause unless specifically excluded. It is the broadest form of cargo protection available.
Ocean Marine covers goods over water (sea/air). Inland Marine covers goods moving over land (truck/train). Most supply chains require both.
If you buy CIF, the seller provides insurance. However, their policy might be minimal. Many importers buy “contingency” insurance to ensure they are fully protected.
P&I is liability insurance for vessel owners. It covers third-party risks like damage to piers, pollution fines, and injuries to crew members.
Standard policies may exclude acts of war or piracy. You typically need to add “War Risk” coverage to be protected against hijacking or seizure.
