Event Insurance

Event Insurance (Special Event Liability) is a short-term policy designed to protect event hosts from financial losses arising from accidents, property damage, or unexpected cancellations. Whether it’s a wedding, a corporate gala, or a music festival, this coverage satisfies venue requirements for General Liability and protects the organizer from lawsuits if a guest is injured or if the event must be cancelled due to extreme weather.

The “Risk Reality”: Venue Requirements & Liability

Planning an event involves moving parts and high stakes. If a guest trips over a cable or gets into an alcohol-related accident leaving your party, you as the host can be held liable. The Insurance Information Institute advises that most venues now mandate hosts to provide a Certificate of Insurance (COI) with at least $1 million in liability coverage before they will unlock the doors. Without this, your deposit and your personal assets are at risk.

Event Insurance Coverage

We provide flexible policies that cover everything from the rehearsal dinner to the post-event cleanup.

What is Covered
General Liability: Covers third-party bodily injury (e.g., slip and falls) and property damage to the venue (e.g., a broken window).
Liquor Liability: Protects you if an intoxicated guest causes an accident or injury after being served alcohol at your event.
Cancellation Coverage: Reimburses lost deposits if the event must be cancelled due to severe weather, vendor bankruptcy, or sudden illness.
Waiver of Subrogation: Often required by venues, preventing your insurer from suing the venue after paying a claim.
What is NOT Covered (Exclusions)
Change of Heart: If a bride or groom decides to call off the wedding voluntarily, cancellation insurance does not pay.
High-Risk Activities: Injuries from fireworks, bounce houses, or extreme sports are often excluded unless specifically added.

The “Dream” Difference: Standard vs. Comprehensive

Most direct quotes only cover the basics in the left column. We shop multiple carriers to secure the critical add-ons in the right column that actually protect your livelihood.

Risk Area Standard Home/Business Policy Special Event Policy
Venue Property Damage Limited/Excluded Covered
Host Liquor Liability Excluded Covered (Critical Add-On)
Deposit Reimbursement Excluded Covered (Cancellation)
Additional Insured (Venue) Difficult to Add Included

Event Insurance Cost

“How much does event insurance cost?” It is a small price to pay relative to the total event budget.

  • Liability Only: According to industry market data, a basic 1-day General Liability policy typically costs between $100 and $200.
  • Liquor Liability: Adding alcohol coverage usually increases the premium by $50 to $150 depending on the number of guests.
  • Cancellation Insurance: This is calculated as a percentage of the total event budget, often costing around $200 to $500 for standard weddings.

The “Independent Difference”: Why Dream Assurance?

Mr. Andre was a massive help beginning to end! He helped us get a great deal on our insurance, and explained everything thoroughly. It isn’t every day you get an insurance agent that you feel actually know what’s they’re talking about AND has your best interest in mind, but he definitely cares about his clients! Thanks Andre, and thanks Dream Assurance!

Frequently Asked Questions

Does event insurance cover wedding cancellation?
Yes, but you must buy “Cancellation Coverage” separately from Liability. It covers lost deposits due to severe weather, serious illness of key participants, or vendor no-shows.
This protects you if you are not in the business of selling alcohol but serve it at an event. If a guest gets drunk and causes an accident, this coverage protects you from being sued.
Often within the same day. Many of our digital partners allow us to quote, bind, and email the COI directly to your venue in under an hour.
Cancellation insurance covers extreme weather (like a hurricane or blizzard) that prevents the event from happening or guests from arriving. It does not cover rain that simply forces an outdoor wedding indoors.
It is not legally required, but it is highly recommended. Your standard homeowner’s policy may have limits on liquor liability or exclude business-related events held at home.
