HVAC Contractor Insurance

HVAC Contractor Insurance is a specialized trade package designed to protect heating, ventilation, and air conditioning professionals from the high-stakes risks of installation and repair. Whether you are a residential service tech or a commercial installer, this coverage shields your business from lawsuits over property damage (like water leaks or fire), theft of expensive tools, and injuries to third parties.

The “Risk Reality”: Water, Fire & Theft

HVAC work is dangerous and expensive. A single brazing torch accident can burn down a house, or a condensate leak in an attic can destroy a client’s ceiling weeks after you leave. Theft is also a major concern; with copper prices rising, work vans are frequent targets. According to the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA), proper risk management is critical for profitability, as a single significant liability claim—such as mold growth from a faulty install—can exceed the annual revenue of a small contracting firm.

HVAC Contractor Insurance Coverage

We structure policies that cover your crew, your truck, and the equipment you install.

What is Covered
General Liability: Covers third-party property damage (e.g., you accidentally drill into a water pipe) and bodily injury (e.g., a customer trips over your vacuum pump).
Installation Floater: Protects expensive equipment (like a $5,000 condenser unit) from theft or damage while it is in transit or waiting to be installed at the job site.
Inland Marine (Tools): Replaces your gauges, recovery machines, and hand tools if they are stolen from your locked vehicle.
Completed Operations: Protects you if a claim arises after the job is done (e.g., a gas line you connected leaks a month later).
What is NOT Covered (Exclusions)
Faulty Workmanship: Insurance covers the resulting damage (the water-soaked drywall) but typically not the cost to replace the AC unit you installed incorrectly.
Employee Injuries: If a technician falls off a ladder, General Liability will not pay. You strictly need Workers’ Compensation for that.

The “Dream” Difference: Standard vs. Comprehensive

Most direct quotes only cover the basics in the left column. We shop multiple carriers to secure the critical add-ons in the right column that actually protect your livelihood.

Risk Area Standard General Liability HVAC Pro Package
Theft of Uninstalled Units Excluded Covered (Installation Floater)
Completed Operations Limited Covered
Data Breach (Client Info) Excluded Covered (Cyber Liability)
Tools left at Job Site Excluded Covered (Inland Marine)

HVAC Contractor Insurance Cost

“How much does HVAC insurance cost?” Rates vary based on your state, payroll size, and whether you do commercial or residential work.

  • Liability Estimates: Industry market data indicates that General Liability for a small HVAC business typically ranges from $600 to $1,500 annually.
  • Commercial vs. Residential: Commercial contractors working on rooftops or with cranes will see higher premiums due to the increased severity of potential accidents.
  • Surety Bonds: Many cities require a license bond (often $10,000 or $25,000) to pull permits. These are separate from insurance and usually cost $100 to $250 per year.

The “Independent Difference”: Why Dream Assurance?

We understand the difference between a filter change and a full system retrofit. “Independent Means Multiple Choices.”

  • Carrier Access: We compare quotes from top carriers and specialty programs designed for the mechanical trades.
  • Certificate Speed: We know you can’t get on the job site or pull a permit without a COI. Our systems allow for rapid certificate generation.
  • Claims Advocacy: If a client accuses you of causing mold or damage, our team fights to ensure the claim is handled fairly so your reputation remains intact.

Mr. Andre was a massive help beginning to end! He helped us get a great deal on our insurance, and explained everything thoroughly. It isn’t every day you get an insurance agent that you feel actually know what’s they’re talking about AND has your best interest in mind, but he definitely cares about his clients! Thanks Andre, and thanks Dream Assurance!

Frequently Asked Questions

Does general liability cover my tools?
No. General Liability covers damage you cause to others. To cover your own tools (drills, gauges, vacuum pumps), you need Inland Marine or “Tools and Equipment” coverage.
This is a policy that covers materials (like a new furnace or AC unit) while they are in your possession or at the job site before they are fully installed and accepted by the client.
In almost every state, yes. Most licensing boards require proof of General Liability (often $300k or $500k minimum) and sometimes a Surety Bond to maintain an active contractor’s license.
If a leak causes physical damage (like ruining a ceiling) or bodily injury, General Liability may cover it. However, pollution liability (environmental cleanup costs for venting refrigerant) often requires a separate endorsement or policy.
This is exactly what General Liability is for. It covers the fire damage to the client’s property. However, it will not pay to replace your own torch or equipment that was lost in the fire.
