Engineer Insurance

Engineer Insurance is a critical risk management tool for structural, civil, mechanical, and electrical engineers. The core of this protection is Professional Liability (E&O), which covers claims alleging that a calculation error, design flaw, or failure to inspect resulted in financial loss, injury, or property damage. Given the scale of modern infrastructure, a single decimal point error can lead to multi-million dollar liabilities.

The “Risk Reality”: Precision & Liability

Engineers are held to an incredibly high standard of care. According to the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), the complexity of modern construction projects has increased the frequency of litigation against engineers for delays and design deficiencies. Without adequate coverage, your firm could be liable for the entire cost of retrofitting a building or repairing a structural failure.

Engineer Insurance Coverage

We build comprehensive insurance towers that protect your firm from the drafting table to the job site.

What is Covered
Professional Liability (E&O): Covers defense costs and settlements for claims of negligence, errors, or omissions in your engineering services.
General Liability: Covers third-party bodily injury or property damage that occurs during site visits or at your office.
Cyber Liability: Protects your firm if sensitive project data or client information is compromised by hackers.
Workers’ Compensation: Mandatory coverage for employees injured while performing field inspections or office work.
What is NOT Covered (Exclusions)
Faulty Workmanship: Insurance generally covers the *damage* caused by an error, not the cost to re-do the engineering work itself.
Dishonest Acts: Fraudulent or criminal behavior is strictly excluded.

The “Dream” Difference: Standard vs. Comprehensive

Most direct quotes only cover the basics in the left column. We shop multiple carriers to secure the critical add-ons in the right column that actually protect your livelihood.

Risk Area General Liability Only Engineer Professional Liability
Structural Failure Liability Excluded Covered
Calculation Errors Excluded Covered
Site Visitor Injury Covered Excluded
Contractual Liability Limited Covered

Engineer Insurance Cost

“How much does engineer insurance cost?” Premiums reflect the high potential severity of claims in this industry and are typically based on annual billings and discipline.

  • Discipline Matters: Structural and geotechnical engineers often pay higher rates than electrical or mechanical engineers due to the higher risk of catastrophic failure.
  • Market Data: While rates vary, industry data suggests small engineering firms can expect Professional Liability premiums to start between $2,500 and $5,000 annually, scaling up with revenue.
  • Claims History: A clean claims record is your best asset for keeping premiums stable over time.

Mr. Andre was a massive help beginning to end! He helped us get a great deal on our insurance, and explained everything thoroughly. It isn’t every day you get an insurance agent that you feel actually know what’s they’re talking about AND has your best interest in mind, but he definitely cares about his clients! Thanks Andre, and thanks Dream Assurance!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is professional liability for engineers?
Also known as E&O, it protects you from lawsuits alleging that your professional services, designs, or calculations were negligent and caused a loss to the client.
Large projects often require “Project Specific Professional Liability” policies. This separates the liability limits for that massive job from your firm’s annual practice policy.
Usually, no. If you are an employee of a firm but do side work, your firm’s policy will not cover your private projects. You would need your own policy for that work.
Standard limits are $1 Million per claim / $2 Million aggregate, but many contracts for large commercial or public works projects will require limits of $2 Million, $5 Million, or more.
It depends on the policy. Environmental or Geotechnical engineers absolutely need Contractors Pollution Liability (CPL) to cover claims related to mold, asbestos, or soil contamination.
